The Makara is a mythical water creature combining the features of a crocodile, reptile, elephant and fish. It is the vehicle of the goddess Ganga (The river Ganga) and also of Varuna, the god of terrestrial waters. The Makara is known to have magical powers related to fertility and water of life. Makara heads in matching pairs often appear in many bracelets and anklet designs seen across India.
